Suite "A" vs Suite "B" Cost estimates

[from Mark Pickhard (Board/Treasurer) on slack, 31 Jan 2026]

Buildout costs for the annex (Suite B) were about $24k for electrical, $5k for building materials (studs, plywood, fasteners), and $2-3k for other (networking, cameras, shop air, etc). That totals $31-32k. Taking into account four years of inflation,

Area Captain

An Area Captain is a decision-maker and caretaker of an area.

As a decision-maker, they (as a group if more than one) decide how to allocate their budget, what tools/equipment/items are allowed in the area, and who is certified to use them. They can set policies for use of their area. They are the first-line decision-makers for an area, only overruled by a majority board vote.

Basic concepts and terms

----------

"Line" vs "Rope"

A piece of working rope is called a line. When you are talking about knots, you talk in terms of line.

Why do we say “line” instead of “rope”?

We have a fair amount of knowledge about various things. Some of it is formal, some of it is tribal.

So let's say, and why not, that you're a Bodger. And you have some knowledge that is worth writing up. You might blog about it. You might set up a GitHub repo and record it there. You might register a domain, get a hosting service, and build a dedicated website. You might create a Facebook page.

Guiding Principle:
Everyone has the right to participate in discussion if they wish; every member should get a chance to weigh in before anyone may speak a second time. Only urgent matters may interrupt a speaker. Only one thing (motion) can be discussed at a time; related issues should be tabled until the current motion is decided.

The Bodgery is a shared workspace and educational environment with many active users. Bodgery members volunteer considerable time for the benefit of all members. Every change to the space has an impact on others. Your behavior has a direct influence on people around you, and an indirect effect on the many other people who use the shop and keep The Bodgery useful, kind, and fun.

First off, what a brilliant idea! Starting and growing the Bodgery has been really rewarding and a lot of fun for us. And your community will benefit greatly from this resource you're creating. Good on ya!

Renting Studios

We rent out “micro workshops” or studios to provide some members a dedicated area for projects and tools, storing materials, starting up a business, etc.

Most studios are 6′ wide by 8′ long. They are located in various areas in the shop. Some are in ‘clean’ areas where dust-making activities are not allowed, others are in shop areas where noise and temporary messes are OK. They come with 120V power and access to the Bodgery's WiFi.
